The Blanket Project
I was invited to participate in the 2016 Winter Shack season, which is a 3-month long, temporary exhibition space built of reclaimed wood pallets located in a community garden in Brooklyn. For my project I screen-printed a chain link pattern onto 30 army blankets and distributed them to attendees. Guests were welcome to use the blankets for warmth during the event and take them home afterwards.
I was interested in exploring ideas relating to the different types of boundaries, borders and fences we all live among. I wanted to break some of my own personal boundaries by engaging with strangers and offering them the comfort of warmth while recognizing the irony that I was simultaneously cladding everyone in their own personal fence. This project was also undertaken with an awareness of the international debate regarding the borders of nations and the ongoing refugee crisis.
